when I started

My gender identity as a child was mostly confused. I wanted people to call me James. My dad explained periods to me when I was 10. I listened to him like it was another dad science lesson and never really felt like it was something that would actually happen to me.

When I was 12 in the changing rooms after hockey practice Left Defense asked the room at large if anyone there hadn’t started their period yet. No one said anything.

My first period came at 14, just after lunch, during biology. The whole day I felt like someone was repeatedly punching me in the belt buckle. Without warning I threw up over the desk. It smelled like apricots. Walking to the nurse’s office I passed out.

Now I’m 19 and I’m questioning my gender identity for the first time since childhood. My periods have never been regular. Vomiting and dizziness still often accompany menstruation. I’ve been on the pill twice. Last year I didn’t have a period for 7 months and it was like a weight off my mind. I don’t know. I feel like my body never quite accepted that this was something that actually happens to me.
